Bio

Sean Farley

Born in Williamsport, PA, music has been a part of my life since the beginning. My grandmother has been a professional pianist and music teacher for twice the length of my lifetime! I grew up around her pianos and organs and was always drawn to their beautiful sounds. It was clear that music was deeply engrained in my heart and soul. I have been learning to play instruments such as piano, voice, violin, drums, bass, and guitar since the age of five. These days, playing the guitar and singing consumes my life and my future!

My love for and commitment to guitar has grown even more, since attending the Roberto-Venn School of Lutherie (http://www.roberto-venn.com) in the Fall of 2010. There I studied the art of hand-making stringed instruments. I opened “Guitarley’s Custom Guitar & Repair” in early 2011 and spend my days repairing, restoring, and custom building stringed instruments (http://www.guitarleys.com). I also enjoy designing and creating my very own “dream guitars” to play at my shows! My whole life revolves around the creation of music and guitars! I’m living my dream.

I have been playing professionally in many different bands over the last ten years. I have been a student of the Blues, Rock, Funk, Soul, and Americana music. My songwriting has elements of all these genres and more. I have made it to, and competed in, the International Blues Challenge (http://www.blues.org/international-blues-challenge/) four times now! It was honor being a finalist in this great event with two different bands, once as a soloist, and once as a duo act!

My dedication to life as a musician was thoroughly tested by nearly tragic accident with a machete knife! The night before a New Year’s Eve gig, with EG Kight and her northern band, I accidentally cut through most of my left thumb, including tendons, ligaments, artery, nerves, and bone joint. I had immediate reconstructive surgery on New Year’s Morning of 2009 and began the road to recovery. I had just over a month till my second Memphis IBC opportunity, to heal and learn to play guitar without the use of my thumb. While in a cast I learned to play slide on my lap, out of pure frustration and longing to play guitar again. I played as well as possible on Beale Street, and then received 6 months of occupational therapy. I was deeply reminded of my love for the guitar through this process and have recovered since!

I’ve open for bands like “Blue Oyster Cult” and “Yes”. I have shared the stage with many internationally renowned musicians such as Ann Rabson, Bnois King, Smokin’ Joe Kubek, “Iron Man” Michael Burks, 2013 Grammy nominee Melissa Reaves, and more. I have shared the stage on several tours with the “Georgia Songbird” EG Kight (http://www.egkightmusic.com/) and recorded on her album “ It’s Hot In Here” in 2008. I even sang a duet with her on this album called “Southern Woman And A Nawthern Man”! I am still lucky to be her lead guitarist in the northeast! I currently occupy the role of guitarist, singer, and songwriter in regional acts such as “Lynn & Farley 5” (http://www.lynnandfarley5.com), “Sean & Adam” (https://www.facebook.com/seanandadam/), “Northern With Glasses” (https://www.facebook.com/northernwithglasses/), and many other various projects!

The latest chapter in my musical life has been national touring as a solo act! I am gearing up for my 5th tour in the beautiful southwest through iAM Independent Artist Management (http://www.iammusic.us). Since making my very first acoustic guitar at Roberto-Venn, I have found appreciation for taking the stage by myself. I have been chasing fuller sounds with LIVE “looping” which allows me to layer myself by recording tracks as I perform. You’ll hear what sounds like multiple guitarists, percussion and rhythms, harmonies, lead guitar licks, and a big soulful voice! I try to take a simple and organic approach to the “one-man-band” show.

I’ve recorded many projects over the last decade, including my most recent solo album in 2013 titled “Karma”. This album includes all originals songs that I wrote, all guitars that I built, and a few special guest musicians. You can listen to and purchase these songs right here at www.seanfarleymusic.com
